Inner Guiding Intelligence At Work: My Personal Story

2024 – Finding my breath
When the student is ready the teacher appears. . . .is how that saying goes. I had never been interested in guided breathing classes because simply, I don’t like other people telling me what to do, let alone how to breathe! I was already born like that. Yet, one fine day in spring my inner guiding intelligence, my IGI (you will hear about it quite often in my stories) calmly suggested to go find a breathwork class in town and check it out. A friend recommended one particular class she had liked and off I went to do some breathing. So many things happened for me in this first class. I had a vision that I am going to practice this kind of breathwork for many years to come. I realized that in order to access an expanded state of consciousness we just need to breath a certain way and let us carry by the right, evocative music. I also immediately understood the great potential of this modality for deep personal healing at depths that hardly any traditional therapy form is able to reach. And I felt so much joy, anticipating the possibility of creating endless new playlists, an activity I absolutely love and have practiced in the past when I was leading ecstatic dance classes. I short, I was on fire!
One month after my first breathwork session I was leading my own very first breathwork class for friends. I just couldn’t wait to start my own practice. After some intensive research I quickly found the perfect organization to enroll in a 6-months facilitator training – the Institute for Neuro Dynamic Breathwork®, found by Michael Stone – and now, not even one year after my first encounter with this work, I am a certified facilitator.
I deeply resonate with one of the foundational principals of this work, that all of us have the innate capacity to heal ourselves. Our inner guiding intelligence knows the way. We just have to get out of our own way and allow that to happen. This is also called self-empowerment. I have never been really at ease in my 20 years of practice as a hands-on therapist with my clients expecting me to know what is wrong with them and provide the solution for their problems. Because that is simply impossible. Now I feel much more in my element when providing the right environment and container for others to embark on their own journey toward true healing. I am also on my own healing journey by practicing the breathwork myself and exploring those inner realms so that I can become a good “tour guide” for others and accompany them on their path toward wholeness and wellbeing.

2004 – Becoming a professional therapist
After having already lived in Mexico for about 2 years I became deeply interested in the entire field of alternative medicine and decided to become a therapist for hand-on bodywork. For about 2 years prior I had been running my little internet/breakfast Café and taking people out on the ocean for snorkel and whale watching boat tours. While both activities were fun, I also knew all the while that I hadn’t been giving up my career in Europe for making country fried potatoes with bacon for tourists. I found a private massage school in Puerto Vallarta, one hour from where I lived, and took a beginner’s course. This was my entry way into the fast field of hundreds of modalities. For the next 2 years I offered massages for my breakfast clients and step by step found my way toward becoming a professional.
Just when I started to think about taking my training to the next level, I met a woman who practiced Rolfing. Whatever she told me about this work sounded so interesting that I spontaneously decided to receive a so-called 10 series from her, a complete treatment for realigning the entire body structure. The results were profound and I immediately enrolled for the foundational training at the American Guild for Structural Integration. It all sounded just like what I was hoping to find without knowing what I was even looking for. I also felt ready at this point for working full time as a therapist and it so happened that my Café got easily sold, I moved to Sayulita and opened my own praxis. Sometimes I can’t quite believe that I have been working in this field already for 20 years!

2001 – From business woman in Italy to boat & Café owner in Mexico
Before I moved to Mexico I have been working for about 10 years in the fashion industry for one giant multinational mail order company, first in Germany, then a few years in Poland and then a dream came through and I was offered a position in Italy. Of course, the job was stressful but life was pretty good in this beautiful country. My career was going well and I thought that things would for sure continue this way. Then 2 things happened: I met a Mexican man ( . . .) and my inner guiding intelligence (the famous IGI) started a serious inner discussion with me about “moving on in life”. I believe that many people have thoughts about leaving their stressful corporate work life behind and find something quieter and more fulfilling. And so was I, tossing ideas around about what a different life could look like and would I ever dare making that kind of big change in my life, but I wasn’t really serious about it. Until that famous IGI of mine eventually put me before an ultimatum! My choice was to either actively initiate change or I would be pushed a little bit toward it and I knew what that could mean: any of those “life-changing” accidents or circumstances that sometimes happen to us without pre-warning which then force us to change directions whether we want it or not.
And so I decided to make that change myself. My Mexican boyfriend had already moved back to his country and I visited him there a few times. During our 3rd vacation together we came upon Banderas Bay and loved its natural beauty of mountains, jungle and the Pacific Ocean. . . . .and made the decision to move here together within a year.
When I stood for the last time in my already emptied out apartment in Italy, I felt like stepping out into thin air. I had quit my well-paid job and was about to move to this wild country I basically knew nothing about. More, I had absolutely no idea how I could earn a living in the months to come! I only knew that this was somehow the right next step for me to take.
